Is It Time?

Signs Your Windows or Doors Are Ready for Replacement

Drafts, fogged glass, sticking sashes, drafty doors, noise and rot are all clues. Pick a sign to see what it may mean and what to consider.

A cozy winter living room with new double-pane windows, a lit fireplace and a snowy yard visible outside, warm amber interior light against cool blue outdoors

Drafts and Cold Spots

A room that is always too hot or too cold, a draft you can feel near the glass or condensation on cold mornings can mean tired seals, thin glass or leaky installation.

Why it happens

  • Worn seals and weatherstripping
  • Single-pane or failed glass
  • Gaps around the frame

What to consider

  • Hold a hand near the frame on a windy day, note which rooms are uncomfortable and compare repair, sealing and replacement options. Glass and installation matter more than the frame alone.

See the energy-efficient windows service

A side-by-side look of two window panes: one fogged with moisture trapped between the panes and one perfectly clear, same window frame, daylight

Fog Between the Panes

Moisture or a milky haze between double panes means the edge seal has failed. Cleaning will not fix it, because the moisture is sealed inside.

Why it happens

  • A failed edge seal
  • Lost insulating gas
  • Sun and heat stress over time

What to consider

  • If the frame is sound, a replacement glass unit can restore clarity. If the frame is also tired, a whole new window may be a better investment.

Windows That Stick or Will Not Stay Up

A sash that sticks, sags or will not stay open is annoying and can be unsafe. Often a worn balance, paint buildup or a shifted frame is the cause.

Why it happens

  • Worn balances or cords
  • Paint or swollen wood
  • Frames out of square

What to consider

  • Check whether the problem is in one window or many. One window often has a simple fix. Many windows with the same issue may point to age.

A Door That Sticks, Sags or Shows Daylight

Light around the edges of a closed door means air gets through too. A door that rubs, will not latch or needs a shoulder to close usually has a shifted frame or loose hinges.

Why it happens

  • Loose hinges or a sagging frame
  • Worn weatherstripping and sweeps
  • Rot at the sill or jamb

What to consider

  • Look for light around the edge, check the hinge screws and probe the bottom of the frame. Repair is often possible, and replacement makes sense when wood is rotted.

Noise and Sun Fading

Traffic noise, a loud street or furniture and floors fading by the window point to glass and seals that no longer do enough.

Why it happens

  • Thin or single-pane glass
  • Leaky seals that let sound through
  • Glass without a Low-E coating

What to consider

  • Notice which rooms and which walls are the problem. Laminated and Low-E glass and tight installation help with noise, sun and fading.

See the soundproof & noise-reducing windows service

Rot, Cracks and Water Stains

Soft wood at the sill, cracked caulk, peeling paint and stains on the wall below a window mean water is getting in and should be fixed before it spreads.

Why it happens

  • Failed caulk or flashing
  • Rotted sills and trim
  • Water getting behind the siding

What to consider

  • Probe the wood with a screwdriver and photograph any stains. Fix the source first, then decide whether to repair or replace.

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about your project?

Call 615-357-7797

What does Music City Door & Window Services do?

We install replacement windows, new construction windows, entry doors, patio doors, French and sliding doors, storm doors, garage doors and openers, locks and hardware, and we repair and restore windows and doors, for homes and businesses across Middle Tennessee.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Call 615-357-7797 or send us a message and we will set up a free estimate. We look at your openings, talk through your goals and give you clear options.

How do you measure for new windows and doors?

We field-measure every opening, check it for plumb, level and square and note any damage, because windows and doors are made to fit your exact sizes. Our free Measuring Guide shows how to take rough measurements yourself.

Should I repair or replace my windows?

If the frame is sound and the problem is a part or a seal, repair can be a good value. If frames are rotted, many windows are failing or comfort and energy are major concerns, replacement usually makes more sense. Our Repair or Replace Advisor gives you a first view.

What is the difference between vinyl, fiberglass and wood windows?

Vinyl is low-maintenance and often good value. Fiberglass is strong and stable with slim frames. Wood and clad-wood offer warm interiors, with cladding on the outside to cut upkeep. We help you compare them for your home.

Do you work with brands like Andersen, Pella and Marvin?

Our Brands page explains several well-known manufacturers and product lines so you can compare them. Ask us which lines we can supply for your project and we will tell you plainly.

How long does installation take?

Many window and door projects are installed in a day or a few days once the products arrive. Custom orders take longer to build, and we give you a realistic schedule when we measure.

Will installation be messy?

We protect floors and furniture, work neatly and clean up. Removing old windows and doors does create some dust and noise, and we plan around your routine.

Where do you work?

We serve 20 Middle Tennessee cities, including Nashville, Franklin, Brentwood, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville and Gallatin. Browse the service areas page or call us to confirm your address.
